1987 Rugby World Cup

The 1987 Rugby World Cup was the inaugural Rugby World Cup to be held. It was co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia. There were 16 teams participating, playing in 4 pools of 4 teams. Seven of the eight IRB members automatically qualified (South Africa was ineligible for political reasons). The other nine places were filled by teams invited to play.

Points were awarded as:

  • 2 for a win
  • 1 for a draw
