In 2023 the Currie Cup First Division was extended to incorporate a new competition called the Mzansi Challenge. The six local teams would contest the Currie Cup First Division and then would be joined by 4 international teams for the Mzansi Challenge. The new teams were;
A 5th team, the Tel-Aviv Heat were to be a part of the competition but their invitation to join was withdrawn by SARU for political reasons. The Diables Barcelona pulled out at the last moment, for logistical reasons. They were replaced by the San Clemente Rhinos team from the USA. The 10 teams will play each other once before a finals series. The matches between the SA teams will also count towards the Currie Cup First Division. The top 2 teams will play in a finals match to determine the winner. |

The Zimbabwe Goshawks team withdrew from the first 3 weeks of the competition due to financial pressures. Their opposition in those games was awarded 5 points.
There were a number of games that were cancelled, usually for financial reasons, and generally the other team involved were awarded 5 competition points.
