The 2002 Currie Cup Top 8 competition had the top 4 teams from each of the two sections of a qualifying series. Points gained in the qualifying series, from playing the other teams that qualified, were carried forward to the Top 8 competition. Teams then played each other once. The top 4 teams went on to the semi-finals.
