The 2006 Currie Cup Premier Division was played for by 8 teams and the teams played for the Currie Cup trophy. Unlike the previous year when all 14 teams played in a qualification round to determine the Premier and First Divisions of the Currie Cup, in 2006 the 5 teams based on Super 14 franchises were automatic qualifiers. Of the other teams, the 2 best finishers in the Vodacom Cup qualified for the Premier Division. The last place was given to the South Eastern Cape as they would be entering nthe Super 14 the following year. This, however did not happen so the 8th place was given to the Griquas. Teams played each other twice on a home and away basis. After the pool play, the top 4 teams played semi-finals and the final to find the winner. |
