European Rugby Champions Cup Results

The 2017 European Rugby Champions Cup will be the 4th season of the premier club rugby competition in Europe. It replaced the Heineken Cup. There will be 20 teams playing in the competition, the top 6 teams from the English Premiership, the top 6 teams from the French Top 14, 7 teams from the Pro 12 and a qualifier from the next best placed teams from the 3 competitions. The Pro 12 qualifiers are the 4 best placed teams from each country and the 3 highest placed teams after that. Teams play in 5 pools of 4 teams and will play each team in their pool twice, home and away. Following pool play, the top team from each pool and the best 3 runners-up will progress to the play-offs: quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final. |
The play-off system that was suspended for the 2015 RWC was reinstated to find the 20th team to play in the Champions Cup. The teams involved were the next best team in the Premiership, the next best team in the Top 14 and the next best two teams from the Pro 12.
These teams were Northampton Saints, Stade Français, Connacht and Cardiff Blues.
