Super Rugby Australia 2020

In 2020 the Super Rugby season was postponed due to the worldwide COVID 19 pandemic. After 7 rounds had been played the competition was postponed indefinitely.

In Australia all rugby was cancelled for a period of time. As the country moved out of the restrictions imposed, Rugby Australia announced a competition for the 4 Super Rugby teams and the Western Force team.

Under the guidelines in place at the time only limited numbers of spectators were allowed into the stadiums on match day.

At the end of the regular games the top 3 teams progressed to play-off games. The 2nd placed team played the 3rd placed team, with the winner progressing further to play the top team in the final.

The new competition will have some new rules in place to try making the games faster and more entertaining.

  • If a match is tied after 80 minutes of regular time, the result will be decided by golden point. The first team to score - by drop goal, penalty kick, or try - during a 5-minute period of extra time will take the win and earn four competition points.
  • Players who receive a red card can be replaced with another player 20 minutes after they are sent from the field. The sent-off player cannot to return to the field and will face Sanzaar’s existing judicial process. There is no change to the yellow card sanction.
  • A restart by a goal line drop out will follow an attacking player who is held up over the over the line or knocks the ball on over the line.
  • A goal line drop out will follow a defender pressing the ball down in-goal.
  • A kick from the attacking team cannot be marked by a defender in their own 22 area. They can do so in the in-goal area.
  • A kick from the 22m area that goes into touch in the oppositions 50m area, after initially landing in the field of play, will lead to the attacking team throwing in at the lineout. This will not apply from a free-kick or if the kicking team takes the ball back into the 22m area.
  • A kick from the defending teams 50m area that lands in the field of play and then goes into touch in the opposition 22m area will lead to the kicking team throwing in at the lineout. This will not apply from a free-kick or if the kicking team take the ball back into their 50m area.
