2018 Super Rugby Results

Super Rugby is the southern hemisphere's leading rugby competition, featuring teams from New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. Since 1996, teams from the three countries have been playing for the title. The competition started with 12 teams, increased to 14 teams and then increased again to 15 teams, with 5 teams from each nation. In 2016, 3 new teams were included to make a total of 18 teams participating in the competition. The 2018 Super Rugby competition had major changes made to it, not the least being a reduction of the number of teams from 18 to 15. The 3 teams to be dropped were the Force (AUS), the Southern Kings (SA) and the Cheetahs (SA). The conference system was altered to suit the reduction in the number of teams. There would be 3 conferences of 5 teams, the Sunwolves from Japan being moved to the Australian conference and the Jaguares from Argentina remaining in the South African conference. |
Each team would play the other teams in their conference twice (home & away) and four of the teams in each of the other conferences, making a total of 16 matches. The conference winners and the next 5 best teams, regardless of which conference they come from, would move through to the Quarter-Finals.
The World Rugby amendments to the rules will be in play for the season. These are:
Scrum:
No signal from referee. The scrum-half must throw the ball in straight but is allowed to align their shoulder on the middle line of the scrum, therefore allowing them to stand a shoulder width towards their own side of the middle line.
Once the ball touches the ground in the tunnel, any front-row player may use either foot to try to win possession of the ball. One player from the team who put the ball in must strike for the ball.
The number eight shall be allowed to pick the ball from the feet of the second-row
Tackle:
The tackler must get up before playing the ball and then can only play from their own side of the tackle “gate”.
Ruck:
A ruck commences when at least one player is on their feet and over the ball which is on the ground (tackled player, tackler). At this point the offside lines are created. Players on their feet may use their hands to pick up the ball as long as this is immediate. As soon as an opposition player arrives, no hands can be used.
A player must not kick the ball out of a ruck. The player can only hook it in a backwards motion.
